The first presentation of the Corum Coin Watch collection along with the motto “time is money”, which would soon change into “time in money” took place at the Basel fair in 1965.

Some pocket watches, fitted with a protecting cover, had already featured coins in their design, and some watchmakers had tried to apply coins in wristwatches. However, the former watches used one side of the coin as a removable cover, whilst in the latter, the coin served as the case back. This system was easily injured.

Rene Bannwart, the present Corum’s holder, decided to do away with the pocket watch’s cover and use the face of the coin as the face of the wristwatch, an innovation that was enabled by the sapphire crystal. The ultra-thin movement was hence sandwiched between the two faces of a cutout coin and surrounded by the round case whose edges were ribbed like those of the coins. This model was only one of its kind and protected by patent in 1964.

Having chosen the $10 American Eagle and the $20 American Double Eagle, Corum instantly became a watch symbol of the States. Moreover, these coins were withdrawn from circulation when Roosevelt was in power in the early 1930s, after the Great Depression, and due to their rarity, instantly became sought by collectors worldwide.

Nevertheless, the production of the Coin Watch was not allowed in the USA. A law in the USA prohibited any ‘distortion’ of coins on its territory, but following months of problematical negotiations, Corum was allowed to produce coins being carried out in Switzerland and not in the States.

The noticeable rarity of these coins and the fact that several American presidents wore the Coin Watch on their wrists, made this unique watch a real emblem in the United States.
